About Study Course
Objective
To provide theoretical knowledge and practical skills and improvement in general practitioner specialty Terms of Reference, to prepare specialists who can provide a steady, continuous and comprehensive take care of patient and his family members and help the patient to make a choice between the offered health services, ensuring the patient's ability to better physical , mental and social activity, are able to assess the patient's health status, diagnose and treat diseases of favor after a certain competences. To prepare for certification doctor family physician specialty, according to the Latvian Republic normative documents.
Learning outcomes
1.Acute and chronic syndromes and diseases: diagnostic, treatment tactics, observation and to send to specialists. Has a knowledge and understanding of:
Nervous system syndromes and diseases:
- patient investigation:motor, sensory disorder determination, balance and coordination disorders, symptoms of cranial nerves injury, disorder of speech, dementia,
- diseases of peripheral nerves, pain of nerves and muscles: neuritis, polyneuritis, carpal tunnel stndrome, myofascial pain, neuromuscular block,
- lumbar and cervical osteochondrosis, discopaty: radiculitis, osteochondrosis,
- neurological infections: tick-borne encephalitis, borreliosis, meningitis,
- cerebrovascular disorders: transistor cerebral ischaemia, ischemic stroke, prophylaxis of cerebrovascular disorders, treatment, care and rehabilitation of the patient with stoke,
- somatoform disorders,
- headache,
- vertigo,
- epilepsy,
- brain tumors.
Rehabilitation and physical medicine:
- knowledge of physical therapy indications and contraindications,
- knowledge of the rehabilitation process, patient referral to rehabilitation.
Process of patients care:
- the patients problem solving,
- cooperation with social workers and local government.
Prevention of the diseases:
- knowledge of the groups at risk and early signs of disease,
- knowledge of screening tests, their application,
- knowledge of primary and secondary prevention.
Promotion of the health:
- nutrition (energy, vitamins, nutritional planning),
- promotion of the healthy lifestyle,
- knowledge and ability to assess the fitness and sports indications and contraindications,
- ability to assess an individual's fitness, health status before the start of sports,
- health assessment in conjunction with exercise and workout intensity,
-education pf the patients: harmfulness of smoking, weight control, nutrition, managment of stress, problems of sexual, prevention of injury, problems caused by menopause.
1.Skills that strengthen during thr family medicine education programs - investigation, methods of treatment, disease prevention and health promotion measures:
Skills in elderly care:
- Obtaining adequate information from people with impaired memory, hearing and visual impairment,
- investigation of the patients with reduced mobility,
- examinations necessary for the evaluation of the amount of old person (evaluation of the productivity of information, possible complications examinations),
- the ability to evaluate the tests and medical events,
- communication skills with patients with chronic and incurable diseases,
- ability to advise on the elderly health care, social rehabilitation,
- the elderly, the disabled rehabilitation possibility of knowledge.
Skills to treat people with mental and behavioral disorders:
- skills of patients history collection,
- tactics of treatment and referral to a specialist.
1.Able to formulate and critically analyze complicated scientific and professional problems. Family physician knowledge and skills gets six key skills:
1. Primary health care organization / management,
2. The person directed care,
3. Specific problem solving skills
4. A comprehensive approach to problem solving,
5. Community-led health care,
6. A holistic approach.
The acquired expertise allows justify decisions, if necessary, carry out additional analysis:
- Are able to explain environmental changes and it’s spread of disease in the population, to understand the preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic methods in this regard.
- Be able to evaluate the patient's complaints, their relationship with the patient's medical condition. Knowledges of diseases and risk factors for the most common diseases in the population, chronic disease care, diseases due to disabilities for positions that require urgent assistance.
- be able to use the prophylactic and diagnostic manipulation use in primary health care, which covers all specialties (that are pediatrics, gynecology, surgery, ear-nose-throat diseases, dermatovenerology, ophthalmology, neurology, psychiatry, cardiology).
- Ability to provide treatment to patient in the primary care level, to organize the rehabilitation, if it is necessary.
- Understanding possibilities in primary and secondary health care level diagnostic, about the opportunities to send patients to a specialist, if necessary.
- Ability to organize and conduct consultations on matters related to the organization of health care, in particular, for issues related to maternal and child health care, family planning.
- Understanding of the issues related to public health.
- Ability to understand the positive doctor-patient relationship the importance of teaching patients to understand their complaints, learn to live with them.
- Ability to work in a team with other primary health care team members and other professionals.
Able to integrate different areas of knowledge:
- Managed by the basic principles of research methods. Ability to apply research methods and principles in their work, understands the nature of the epidemiological study.
- Have the skills and the willingness to carry out independent research.
Able to demonstrate understanding and ethical responsibility of scientific results or professional potential impact on the environment and society:
- Able to organize research, analyze their results compare with other countries in the study data.
