Objective

This course aims to provide basic nutrition knowledge that can be applied to an athletes training and competition program to promote improved athletic performance. The following are topics that will be discussed during this course:
• Differences in diet for different sports.
• The role of nutritional supplements and their dosage.
• Nutrition planning for the injured athlete.
• Introduction to anti-doping.
• Effects of popular diets among athletes.
• Critical use and analysis of scientific databases.

Prerequisites

Anatomy, normal and pathological physiology and biochemistry. Basic knowledge of environmental management.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

• Distinguish the specifics of different sports in terms of nutrition;
• Perceive the impact of various nutritional supplements on athletic performance;
• Recognize the effects of popularized diets on athletic performance;
• Comprehend the need for changes in nutrition after sports related injuries.

Skills

• Obtain information on substances containing prohibited ingredients quickly;
• Choose nutrition planning that is suitable for the respective sport;
• Evaluate scientific articles critically.

Competence

• Understand the workloads of different sports and the amount of energy required in respect to nutrition.
