Objective

To provide knowledge of Latvian and European Union legislation regulating fields of food and nutrition, as well as to provide knowledge regarding development of food legislation and nutrition policy in Latvia.To familirise with food sector legislation (regulations, directives, laws, Cabinet of Ministers regulations and ordinances) and its practical application. Deepen knowledge of the development of nutrition policy in Latvia, the main nutritional issues in Latvia, Europe, the world. To identify the main stages of development of the nutrition policy in Latvia, including the most important studies in the field of nutrition, the institutions and persons involved.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of public administration and legislation as part of general secondary education.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.Knowledge of the application of legislation in the fields of food safety and nutrition. In-depth knowledge of policy planning processes in Latvia, the role of state, governmental, and non-governmental organizations in the planning process. Theoretical knowledge of the legislation on foodstuffs and their application, as well as of the latest legislation in the European Union and Latvia. In-depth knowledge of the history, role, and potential for future development of nutrition policies in various physiological conditions, disease prevention, and treatment.

Skills

1.Students are able to assess the compliance of a food product with the requirements of normative acts and recommendations for healthy nutrition. Students are able to advise food manufacturers on the necessary requirements for food production, including products for specific consumer groups. Students are able to use online normative act databases, find the necessary information on food and food composition databases. Students are able to evaluate research projects submitted in the field of nutrition policy and are familiar with the history and development of nutrition policy.

Competence

1.Students are familiar with nutrition policy development planning documents, and normative acts of the Republic of Latvia and the European Union, and can apply them in practice.
