Objective

Holistic approach for children and young adults' dental health and be able to perform related and age – appropriate preventive treatment of both dental caries and gingivitis / periodontitis.

Prerequisites

Preliminary knowledge of dental development, Anatomy, Histology, Preventive Dentistry, Pre-clinical studies, Periodontology, Dental Public Health.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Studies of the subject acquisition should result in knowledge and competences in development of child’s teeth and occlusion, oral diseases in children, their prevention and treatment. Caries risk assessment. Emergency help with teeth trauma.

Skills

Upon completion of the course, the students will be able to:
• establish contact with a child and their parents;
• use suitable communication skills during the educational work, taking into account the patient's age;
• record anamnesis, do examination, cariess risk assessment, diagnose dental caries in primary, mixed and permanent dentitions;
• diagnose gingivitis and perform the necessary treatment;
• have understanding of emergency aid, treatment of dental trauma;
• recognise developmental defects of the dental hard tissues and their prevention;
• do appropriate pit and fissure sealants' application;
• ensure dental services and oral health education for patients with special needs – autism, cerebral palsy.

Competence

To identify risks groups according to patient’s general health conditions.
To identify risks groups according to patient’s skills in oral hygiene, saliva testing, intensity of caries, periodontal and oral mucosa conditions and occlusion.
To develop a plan for oral health education, prevention and clinical treatment, its precise and positive accomplishment individually for each patient in paediatric dentistry.
Basic principles of pedagogy, components of study process, types of information selection and transfer. Motivation in the educational process and teaching techniques.
Possibilities of changing attitudes and behavior within the education and process.
