Objective

To become ready for self-dependant clinical work by practical working in the Dentistry and Maxillofacial Clinic.

Prerequisites

Maxillofacial topographic anatomy and operative surgery; oral surgery; pathological physiology, general and specialized pathology, general surgery, diagnostic radiology, internal diseases and basics of propedeutics, pharmacology, emergency medicine.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Student can present basic knowledge on organization of practical dentistry. Student differentiates several patient groups and financial sources, medical documentation and regarding accounting and reports, as well as insurance documents, documentation for disability medical examination, pre-oncology and oncology prevention, diagnostics and tactics; and follows norms of ethics stated by Latvian Doctors Society in different situations.

Skills

Student is able to demonstrate a proper: medical clothing, preparation of working place, infection control, introducing with patient, patient`s complaints management, recordings about patient`s life, family, medical, and specialized anamnesis. Student can demonstrate: general health status (pulse, blood pressure); intra- and extra-oral investigation (inspection, palpation) and initial diagnosis determination; choice of radiologic, laboratory, or other appropriate diagnostic methods and interpretation of received data; definition of diagnosis; choice of treatment, anaesthesia tactics, and planning of surgical technique; informative conversation with patient and informed consent; regime after treatment and fixation of appointment for control, medical recordings in dentistry patient card (form No 043/u) and in the students diary; reliable self-assessment and following more experienced colleagues instructions and recommendations.

Competence

Student is competent to assess independently the diagnostics of most frequent diseases of oral surgery profile and maxillofacial trauma, and patient`s general health. Student can choose appropriate anaesthesia methods and medications, and can apply them during teeth extractions, intra-oral incision, wound-dressing, and wound care. Student can prescribe preoperative treatment and regime.
