Objective

Improve knowledge and develop skills necessary for ensuring successful protection of children’s rights in police work.

To develop understanding:
- of the principal issues of children’s rights protection (children’s rights protection system, principal international and national laws in the area of children’s rights protection; models of interaction of international and national laws);
- on the cooperation models in the area of children’s rights protection between state and municipal institutions, public and non-governmental organizations;
- on the basic communication principles according to the child’s age specifics, in crisis situations and with children with dependency issues;
- on the rights and obligations of children and parents and the limitations of such rights;
- on types and signs of violence and elimination of violence
- on the status of a minor within the meaning of the Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure Law and the Administrative Procedure Code of Latvia.

Prerequisites

Necessary preliminary knowledge: basic concepts of law.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

- of the principal issues of children’s rights protection (children’s rights protection system, principal international and national laws in the area of children’s rights protection; models of interaction of international and national laws);
- on the cooperation models in the area of children’s rights protection between state and municipal institutions, public and non-governmental organizations;

- to understand the children’s rights protection system and to apply in practice the principal international and national laws in the area of children’s rights protection;
- to assess the cooperation possibilities with state and municipal institutions, public and non-governmental organizations in the area of children’s rights protection;
- to evaluate the basic principles of communication according to the child’s age specifics, in crisis situations and with children with dependency issues;
- to acquire the basic communication principles according to the children age specifics and to develop practical skills in communicating with minors;

Competence

- to apply in practice international laws in the area of children’s right protection;
- to develop skills necessary for ensuring successful protection of children’s rights in police work
- to develop practical skills in communicating with minors.
