Objective

To provide knowledge about mental disorders that develop in somatically ill patients. To provide knowledge about the impact of somatic disease (intoxication, cerebral hypoxia, pain, somatic disease as a factor of psychological stress) on mental health development and progress. Learn basic psychopathological syndromes that develop in somatically ill patients. To provide knowledge about mental disorders according to ICD -10 classification, which develop in patients with cardiological diseases (myocardial infarction, ischemic heart disease) and cardio surgery, endocrinopathies, gastrointestinal diseases, kidney diseases, and respiratory diseases.
Mental illness diagnosis, treatment, medication and basic principles of the social rehabilitation in somatic inpatient and outpatient care settings.
Mastering the mental health care service organisation principles of the division of powers between internists, family physicians and mental health services, psychiatric patients' care planning and organisation. Acquiring psycho-educative therapy principles, adherence issues, and family education when facing patients with comorbide mental disorders to somatic diseases: cardio - vascular and respiratory diseases, gastro - intestinal tract, urinary tract, endocrine system and respiratory diseases.

Prerequisites

• Psychiatry and narcology training course in the 4th year of MF at the Department of Psychiatry and narcology of RSU;
• Internal medicine training course in the 4th and 5th year of MF;
• Advanced course in the pathology of lung diseases;
• Advanced course in the pathology of gastrointestinal diseases;
• In psychology, developmental and medical psychology (phases of crisis response, psychological defense mechanisms, personality structure);
• Medical ethics (specifics of ethical issues in psychiatry);
• In epidemiology (incidence, prevalence of mental and behavioral disorders, types of research);
• Basics of clinical patient care (deontology, iatrogeny, patient interview, investigation methods);
• In clinical pharmacology (antidepressants, mood stabilizers, tranquilizers, antipsychotics);
• In psychosomatic medicine;
• Health care organization and economy;
• In anesthesiology and resuscitation.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Gained knowledge about the causes of mental disorders and the development of clinical features, early diagnostic possibilities for patients with somatic diseases (cardiological, endocrinopathies, gastrointestinal, kidney and lung diseases).
Detection and diagnostics of mental disorders in patients with internal diseases. Medication rehabilitation fundamentals and supportive specifics of patients with internal pathology.

Skills

Acquired skills to carry out the assessment of mental disorders, psychiatric disorders' structured description in documentation. Usage of diagnostic scale. Acquisition of practical peculiarities of the different groups of patients (comorbid mental disorders and somatic diseases: cardiological, endocrinopathies, gastrointestinal, kidney disease and others).

Competence

Acquired competence to manage mentally ill patient in internist's practice. Must be able to identify the main features of mental illnesses of somatically ill patients. Must be able to make a diagnosis, develop a treatment plan and organise it, to be able to distribute medical competence between internists and psychiatrists, must be able to establish a therapeutic relationship and the therapeutic environment, to be able to educate the patient and the patient's family. Must be able to use diagnostic scale, to know how to reduce the stigma and prejudice for patients, to be able to organise emergency hospitalisation for psychiatric patients.
