Objective

Develop an integrated understanding of the basic principles of psychology, sociology and therapeutic communication and the ability to apply them in simulated and close-to-clinical situations in order to ensure patient (individual)-centred, quality and collaborative care.

Prerequisites

High school-level knowledge in social sciences.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.Explains basic concepts of psychology (general and social psychology), the most important theoretical approaches.
Describes the relationship between personality, cognitive and emotional spheres, including the processes of emotion, stress and adaptation, as well as the risk and protective factors of professional burnout.
Explains basic concepts of sociology and the impact of theory, socialisation processes and social environment (family, social roles, norms, community) on an individual’s health behaviour.
Describes the types, structure and importance of contact and communication in patient-centred care.
Explains the principles of therapeutic and professional communication in nurse-patient clinical interactions, including verbal, non-verbal, empathetic, ethical and cultural sensitivities.
Explain the basic principles of clinical interview, counselling and motivational interview, as well as the causes of conflicts and approaches to resolution in the clinical environment.

Skills

1.After completing the course, the student is able to:
1. Recognize and analyze the patient’s emotional responses as well as the effects of personality, cognitive and social environmental factors on health behavior and cooperation in the care process in simulated learning situations.
2. Develop therapeutic contact and structured conduct of professional conversation with the patient (including history acquisition) by tailoring communication to the patient’s needs and situation in a learning environment closer to clinical practice.
3. Apply clinical interviews, consultations and motivational interviews to simulated learning situations in basic techniques.
4. Apply conflict management and resolution techniques to simulated professional contact situations while maintaining professional and respectful communication.
5. Recognise occupational congestion and burn-out risk situations, carry out self-assessment and plan further development of communication and self-management skills.

Competence

1.After completing the course, the student shall:
Integrate the knowledge of psychology, sociology and therapeutic communication by addressing patient-centred care situations in a simulated and clinical practice-aligned learning environment.
Implement, independently and responsibly, effective professional contact with the patient, his family and the care team in simulated learning situations, including in emotionally complex cases.
Critically evaluate the quality of communication, their professional conduct and improvement needs in order to improve future performance in the context of studies and clinical practice.
