Objective

To provide medical residents with opportunities to acquire and improve theoretical knowledge and skills in the specific health care field of traumatology and orthopaedics in order to prepare them for successfully passing the certification examination in the specialty of a doctor of physical and rehabilitation medicine, in accordance with laws and regulations of the Republic of Latvia.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.Will demonstrate the acquired knowledge:
• will be able to explain the diagnostic principles specific to injuries;
• will be able to name and describe different types of injuries and polytraumas;
• will be able to classify and define the symptoms of orthopaedic diseases;
• will be able to name and describe complications and late treatment results.

Skills

1.The medical resident will be able to:
• assess injury and orthopaedic patients in the acute stage of treatment, using appropriate assessment methods;
• use different concepts and terms in characterising orthopaedic diseases;
• identify risk factors for complications and create a prevention plan.

Competence

1.The medical resident will use the acquired knowledge and skills:
• to interpret the data obtained in the early assessment of patients;
• to evaluate and analyse the injury and disease results corresponding to the age and state of health;
• to justify the need for initiating complication prevention measures for injury and orthopaedic patients.
