Objective

To develop a creative potential in terms of visually plastic art (VPA), to promote the identification and evaluation of one's art creation experience, to introduce with the language of art. To develop spontaneity, creativity, self-reflection skills. To develop knowledge, skills and competence about the use of art language, signs, images, symbols, metaphors, interpretation, methods of revealing symbolic meaning in art therapy. To develop an understanding of the historical development of VPAT in Latvia and in the world. To develop an understanding of the diversity and basic principles of theoretical approaches. To develop the ability to choose and use art-based assessment and evaluation tools appropriate to the specifics of clients/patients, to develop an understanding of the criteria for evaluating the results of art therapy.

Prerequisites

Professional activity in arts therapy and its legal fundaments (term 1), Assessment principles and process in arts therapy (term 2).

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

In the entire study course "Visual Plastic Art Therapy I": names and describes various VPMT techniques; names and describes art-based evaluation and assessment tools, explains and justifies their application to different groups of patients/clients; defines general concepts in the context of the profession; understands the ethical considerations regarding assessment and evaluation; names the facts about the history of the development of VPMT; explains the basic principles of various theories of psychology and psychotherapy, explains the common and different features of a sign, image, symbol, metaphor; describes the multiple meanings of the symbol.

Skills

In all parts of the study course: create artwork in various VPAT techniques; describe and evaluate their own artistic expression experience and the language of art; apply evaluation/assessment instruments in relation to different groups of clients/patients; analyse the obtained results; analyse the sources of information about theoretical approaches; choose the most suitable case for the theoretical conception, link it to the respective target group of clients/patients; understand the specifics of different theoretical approaches and are able to apply the most appropriate approach to work with a particular client/patient group; mention specific methods/techniques of art, which are appropriate for the theoretical approach; aggregate the universal meanings of symbols, found in the sources of literature, and connect to the personal meaning of the symbol; analytically characterise the expansion and transformation of the symbol meaning; recognise and highlight metaphors and metaphoric comparison in a narrative or creative work.

Competence

In all parts of the study course: can use various VPAT techniques, explain and demonstrate technical approaches; integrate the quality of artistic expression elements in the analysis of their own and other people's artwork; evaluate the advantages and restrictions of their own artistic expression; apply and substantiate the use of a particular evaluation/assessment instrument; choose and apply the evaluation and assessment instruments that are appropriate for client/patient's needs, age and workplace specificity pursuant to the medical technologies of art therapy; integrate and substantiate the application of theoretical approaches that are appropriate for the group of clients/patients; formulate and explain the manifestation of the concept of theoretical approaches in art therapy.
