Frequently Asked Questions

Applications and team requirements

What business ideas can I submit?
The business incubator has the following non-supported activity areas: alcoholic beverages, narcotic, psychotropic and other intoxicating substances, intimate goods and services, tobacco products and gambling.
All ideas not related to the non-supported topics are welcome in B-Space programmes, regardless of their field or complexity.

How can I prove that I am a student if I do not yet have a student ID, since I will only begin my studies in February?
If, at the time of application, a student ID has not yet been issued but the start of studies is planned in the near future, you can confirm your student status with a certificate from the Student Service or by submitting a copy of the Study Agreement (the contract signed with the university prior to the start of studies).

Can the team include people from other universities or industry professionals?
Student teams of 2–5 people with a common business idea are invited to apply. The team must include at least one student in a bachelor's, professional studies, master's, doctoral or residency study program or a student of a professional and general education institution and one participant related to RSU (students, academic and general staff and graduates of last 3 years).

Who is considered an RSU representative?
The team must include at least one student in a bachelor's, professional studies, master's, doctoral or residency study program or a student of a professional and general education institution and one member affiliated with RSU, RSU LASE or RSU RCMC. These can be RSU, RSU LASE and RSU SCMC students, academic and general staff and graduates who have graduated within the last 3 years.

Do participants need to be in a specific study programme or field?
No. Any RSU student can participate in the incubation programme regardless of study programme, level or field. The same applies to students from other universities or vocational education institutions included in the team.

Can one person participate in several teams at the same time?
No. Within the incubation programme, one person can only be part of one team at a time. However, participants are encouraged to network and exchange experiences, so if your friends submit their own idea, there is nothing preventing you from giving advice or supporting them informally.

Can we add new team members during the incubation?
Yes. If you find a like-minded person during the development of your idea and wish to add them to the team, it is possible. The new team member must submit the relevant documentation (CV, and for students – student ID copy). For adding new team members during the programme, please contact Bspaceatrsu[pnkts]lv and a B-Space colleague will review the individual case and explain the joining process.

I already have my own company, can I participate?
Students participating in the incubation program and already conducting business activities may participate in the incubation program with a new idea that is not related to the existing business activity. B-Space staff must be specifically informed about this.

Can I choose my own supervisor?
Each team admitted to the incubation programme will be assigned a supervisor (industry professional) who will help throughout the programme by providing advice and practical support. Supervisors are assigned based on the team’s idea and development stage.
Teams may also bring their own supervisor, by informing the B-Space team (email Bspaceatrsu[pnkts]lv) after being admitted to the programme.

Do pre-incubation participants have advantages?
The pre-incubation programme helps prepare for the incubation programme, refine ideas, test them in the early phase, find a team and understand the basics of entrepreneurship. However, participation in pre-incubation does not affect the evaluation process of the incubation programme, so all applicants have equal chances of being selected.

Programme process and content

Are all applicants admitted?
No, participation in the B-Space incubation programme is competitive. This means that all teams first submit applications and pitch their ideas to a jury, which evaluates them according to specific criteria — including innovation level, market potential and team capability. The best teams are selected for the programme.

What will I have to during the programme?
During the programme, the team or one of its representatives must attend online classes, and work with the student supervisor and mentors to learn entrepreneurship skills and develop their idea. When submitting an application, teams also prepare an individual activity plan, which should be followed as much as possible during the development of the solution.

How much time per week do I need to dedicate?
In most weeks, teams need to dedicate at least one and a half hours to attend classes, plus additional time for individual work with supervisors and mentors. The amount of time needed for idea development outside the classes depends on the team’s enthusiasm and the complexity of the idea. Teams will also be offered various additional events and conferences that may last from a few hours to several days.

Will class recordings be available?
Yes, sessions that you cannot attend live will be available as recordings.

Funding and practical matters

Does the business idea belong to me after the programme?
The business idea belongs to the participant team. However, the incubation programme is a sandbox for testing and validating your idea, therefore materials, prototypes and designs purchased with the initial funding remain the property of B-Space.

How does procurement of materials work?
Once the contract is signed, the team will be able to consult with the B-Space administrative project manager, who will explain the procurement process and help clarify when the team will receive the necessary materials or services for idea development.

Do I receive the funding to my bank account?
The initial funding of up to 3506 EUR, which the team receives upon admission to the incubation programme, is not given in cash. Instead, RSU purchases the necessary consultations, services, and materials according to the budget form submitted in the application. The cash prize of 3000 EUR awarded to the three best teams at the end of the programme is paid out in money.

What can and cannot be purchased with the funding? What if I don’t manage to use the funding before Demo Day?
All questions about funding will be answered during the Finance ABC webinar on 9 January.
