Latvian language courses
The Faculty of Continuing Education of Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) offers Latvian language courses to international students and other English speakers as well as medical doctors wishing to qualify for the second level professional education programme "Residency in Medicine".
The number of listeners within the group is limited (6–12 persons).

EUR 216 The aim of the course: to acquire Latvian at conversational level in everyday and study related situations in conformity with language levels developed by the Council of Europe (A1/A2 level).
Objectives of the course
- To acquire Latvian vocabulary with an aim to exchange information in everyday and study-related situations
- To be able to ask simple and precise questions and answer them
- To be able to utter, perceive and deliver information related to daily routine and studies and personal information in both oral and written form
- To engage into conversation about simple topics related to daily routine and studies
- To use simple linguistic constructions
- To observe basic rules of the language both in speech and writing
Results and competences
Upon successful completion of the course, the listener will be able to:
- comprehend and develop simple sentences and phrases with an aim to meet certain needs;
- introduce him/herself, to ask questions about personal issues (e.g., about place of residence, famous people and personal belongings) and answer them;
- hold a simple conversation in case the companion speaks slowly, clearly and is eager to help;
- comprehend simple sentences and commonly used expressions related to topical daily issues (e.g., family, shopping, surroundings, work);
- hold a conversation on familiar topics.

To acquire Latvian at conversational level in order to be able to communicate with patients and apply Latvian in simple daily situations.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge
On successful completion of the course, a language learner will be able:
- to use Latvian in daily situations;
- to use medical vocabulary in Latvian;
- to make conversation with a patient in Latvian.
Practical skills
On successful completion of the course, the language learner will be able:
- to apply Latvian in simple daily communication process;
- to select and use appropriate medical vocabulary in communication with a patient;
- to develop a case history.
Competence
On successful completion of the course, the learner will be able to use Latvian in simple daily communication and as well as use medical vocabulary in practice.
The speed of progress in language acquisition is very individual as it depends on the devoted time and the learner's cognitive ability. The number of lessons is approximate. In the study process, it could be changed depending on the learners' individual skills.Content of study course
