Study course description
Preliminary Knowledge:
Cytology. It is advisable to acquire biology, anatomy, physiology and biochemistry simultaneously.
Objective:
To develop general and specific understanding of human cells, tissues (epithelial, connective, muscle and nerve tissues) and structure of organs, especially those of head, face and neck (oral cavity, including tongue, teeth, lips, salivary glands, and sense organs). Understanding the necessity of this knowledge in practical work of dentists will be developed and a positive attitude towards this difficult subject will be created. Course description: the concept of all the differentiated organ structures in the human body (gastrointestinal, immune and haematopoietic, heart and blood vessels, neuroendocrine, respiratory, urinary, reproductive), their structural aging changes, and of connection between the above mentioned structures and those of face, jaw and neck.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
Within the study course, individual work is organized, analyzing micropreparations and preparing lesson protocols. Individual work with recommended literature, according to the topics of lectures and classes. Preparation of presentations in small groups, according to the course topics. Analysis of the results of scientific publications to deepen the understanding of the subject in relation to the structure of teeth and the oral cavity.
Assessment Criteria:
• Laboratory class protocols of appropriate quality, finished and submitted in due time; • Participation in Colloquia and Seminarium; demonstration of the acquired theoretical knowledge and practical skills during the test; • 1st Semester – Semester test, 2nd Semester – Exam. Oral examination at the end of the course. During the examination the students’ theoretical knowledge of tissue and organ morphology and practical skills in analysing specimens and schematic images are tested. Students show how to specify age-related changes in tissues and organs. They demonstrate their understanding of development of relevant processes and functions of tissues and organs especially in all the structures of the oral cavity as well as the ability to relate morphology with processes.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to describe the cell structure of the differentiated body tissue and organs; indicate correlations between the face, jaw and neck structures and those of different body tissue and organs; explain aging changes of structures; distinguish the role of histology in cases of different changes in teeth and jaw, and face structures.
Skills:Students will be able to: • identify face, jaw and neck structures in routinely stained histological slides; • differentiate main tissue groups in histological schemes; • work with special literature, record, describe and display prepared histological specimens; • prepare reports and give presentations on issues of histology.
Competencies:Students will be able to recognise embryonic tissue and organ morphology and structure in clinical specimens and pictures of the science of morphology. They will be able to distinguish between healthy and pathological tissues particularly in oral mucosa and tooth structure. The students will be able to evaluate the quality and methods of specimens and the way they might be used in clinic.
