The names of traditional departments have changed several times over the years, until one department was created – the Department of Morphology.
At the invitation of the Latvian Academy of Medicine administration, M. Pilmane returned from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Latvia and became the director of the Institute of Anatomy and Anthropology in late 2001. At the same time, she was elected professor of the Latvian Academy of Medicine, and in 2002 she became the head of the Department of Histology of also the Department of Embryology, which was established in 2002.
Both departments were merged into the Department of Histology and Embryology in December 2008. Ruta Žagare, Acting Assistant Professor was Head of the Department of Anatomy Studies since 2002, and of the Department of Anatomy since 2008. The Department of Anatomy and the Department of Histology and Embryology were merged in 2009 (RSU Senate decision dated 30 June 2009) and the Department of Morphology was established; professor M. Pilmane became its head in July that year.
