On 24 March, at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU), the first group of 77 aspiring coaches of the programme Basic Knowledge for Obtaining Sports Coach Category C Certificate completed their training in a ceremonial atmosphere.

This was the first group to graduate from the programme at RSU, and the large number of participants confirms the high demand for qualified sports specialists as well as the overall development of the sports sector. Participants represented various sports, each with their own motivation and experience, but they all shared a common goal of learning a scientifically grounded approach to coaching.

At the closing ceremony, Asst. Prof. Inese Ļubinska, Head of the RSU Sports Study Field and the programme, emphasised the responsibility of the coaching profession:

‘If I could, alongside the Hippocratic Oath, I would create an Oath of Zeus, the God of Strength, in which every sports specialist would swear: I acknowledge that my work serves the physical and mental health of people; I understand that every incorrect movement I teach and every unfounded recommendation I give, can have inevitable consequences for a person’s health. I will do everything to ensure that every individual, regardless of age, gender, or physical fitness, experiences the joy of movement!’

The prospective coaches were joined by the teaching staff at the event who had worked with the group participants and praised their discipline, interest, and eagerness to learn.

‘It was a pleasure to work with such motivated people. During discussions and practical sessions, we felt a genuine desire to understand the nuances of sports physiology, pedagogy, and psychology so that they can provide the highest quality support to their students in the future,’ the staff noted.

Although the first group has already received their certificates, the training process is actively continuing for the second group, which began its studies last winter. Meanwhile, for those who were unable to register in previous sessions, there will be an opportunity to join the third group this spring, with the training to start in the autumn.
