On Tuesday 13 December, the Latvian Cabinet of Ministers unanimously decided to reorganise the Latvian Academy of Sports Education (LASE), which is subordinate to the Ministry of Education and Science (MoES), by affiliating it to Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) as of 1 January 2026. LASE will retain its academic and scientific autonomy and will continue to operate as a separate unit of RSU.

RSU is one of four research universities in Latvia and, as it is part of the research university ecosystem, LASE will be able to qualify for base and performance funding from the Ministry of Education and Science. It will also be able to attract significant funding from Latvia’s recovery and resilience plan, which will help strengthen the competitiveness of the study programmes offered at the academy and boost scientific achievements. Among the issues to be addressed as part of the reorganisation will be to improve the academy’s infrastructure and remuneration system and to attract appropriate funding from the national budget and EU support mechanisms.

A reorganisation commission will be established within the next six months that will include representatives from LASE, RSU, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Health, student unions from both universities, and trade unions. A detailed reorganisation plan for the academy is scheduled to be drawn up by 1 April 2024.
