On Friday, 31 March, the inauguration ceremony for the Rector of Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU), Professor Aigars Pētersons’ second term in office was held in the presence of a wide circle of the university’s staff and guests. Prof. Pētersons was re-elected as Rector on 1 January 2023 and will remain in office until the end of 2027. He was re-elected by a unanimous vote of the members of the Constituent Assembly on 23 November 2022.

The inauguration ceremony took place at the close of RSU Research Week, which has attracted guests from 46 countries. The Rector was therefore congratulated not only by government representatives, Riga City Council, RSU students and staff, non-governmental organisations, and heads of other universities, but also by international guest lecturers and researchers. 

This year, the elections for rector were held for the first time according to the new procedure laid down in the Law on Higher Education Institutions - the RSU Council organised the call for candidates, and the members of the Constituent Assembly elected the rector. Thus, the ceremony, hosted by Mārtiņš Daugulis, was opened by Chairman of the RSU Council Reinis Bērziņš, who together with the Chair of the Constituent Assembly, Professor Ilze Gropis, honoured Prof. Pētersons on his appointment. 

After taking the oath of office, the Rector was formally congratulated by serving ministers and politicions, as well as the rectors of other Latvian institutions of higher education.

After taking the oath, the rector was congratulated by the Minister of Health Līga Meņģelsone, the Chair of the RSU Student Union Elizabete Maija Liepa, the President of the Latvian Academy of Sciences Ivars Kalviņš, the Chairman of Riga City Council Mārtiņš Staķis, the President of the Latvian Medical Association Ilze Aizsilniece and others. The rectors of other Latvian institutions of higher education also congratulated Rector Prof. Pētersons.

Guests were entertained by a musical performance by the outstanding pianist Reinis Zariņš. The programme that the four-time winner of the Great Music Prize played included Variations by Jānis Ivanovs, Étude No. 2 by Philip Glass and Argentine Dancers by Alberto Ginastera. Organist Inese Paiča also performed at the event.
