On Wednesday, 28 October, members of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Latvia visited the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Medical Education Technology Centre (METC). During the meeting, the visitors learned about the opportunities for simulation-based medical education at RSU and the university’s development, while also strengthening contacts for future cooperation in education, research and innovation.

In May this year, RSU joined the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Latvia, becoming part of the Latvian-Swedish network for business, education and cooperation. Membership of the Chamber provides wider opportunities to forge partnerships with Swedish companies and organisations, particularly in healthcare innovation, technological development and knowledge transfer.

During their visit to METC, the Chamber’s members had the opportunity to explore the environment in which future and current healthcare professionals acquire practical skills using modern simulation technologies. This approach allows them to hone their professional skills and prepare to work with patients in safe and controlled conditions.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to foster dialogue between the academic community and the business sector on potential collaboration, exploring how scientific knowledge and technological solutions can contribute in practical ways to the development of healthcare.

RSU and Sweden have been cooperating for 35 years. Since 1991, when the university enrolled its first student from Sweden, this cooperation has expanded considerably. RSU currently has 1,048 students from Sweden, making them the university’s largest international student community. RSU also carries out joint research projects with Swedish universities and scientific institutions, including Karolinska Institutet.

The Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Latvia unites around 100 members and promotes cooperation, the exchange of experience and the development of new partnerships between Latvian and Swedish companies and organisations. RSU’s membership of the Chamber complements the university’s existing cooperation with Sweden, forging closer links between education, science and business.

The visit by the members of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Latvia to METC is another step towards strengthening RSU’s international collaboration, establishing new contacts and creating opportunities for the joint development of innovations that make a practical contribution to healthcare and society.
