We are deeply saddened to announce that Rolands Gibners, assistant and former Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Faculty of Medicine, orthopaedic traumatologist and spine surgeon, has passed away after a serious illness.

Born in Riga on 2 February 1958, he worked at RSU from 1993 to 2023, and from 2003 to 2009 he was Head of the Department of Orthopaedics.

Gibners was a doctor in Valmiera (1982-1986), a fellow of the Latvian Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics (1986-1994), a doctor at the Hospital of Traumatology and Orthopaedics (1994-2023), and chief physician (2000-2023).

Gibners specialised in the treatment of spinal injuries and diseases and was one of the best specialists in Latvia treating patients with spinal deformities. He trained and became specialised in Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, France, Spain and Canada.

His scientific research work was devoted to surgery for spinal injuries and disorders. He is the author of several books. He was awarded the Cross of Recognition (2007) and the Commemorative Medal for Participants of the Barricades of 1991.

Rolands Gibner's funeral will be held on 24 January at noon in the Great Hall of the Riga Crematorium.
