26 May this year marked a significant event for Latvia’s community of physicians and medical students – the publication of the new book Infectious Diseases, developed through the joint efforts of 14 authors under the leadership of infectious disease specialist and hepatologist Dr. habil. med. Ludmila Vīksna.

The general section of this publication is particularly extensive, focusing on the mechanisms underlying the development of infectious diseases and explaining the principles common to the progression of various infections. The content of this section has been significantly influenced by the experience of the recent COVID-19 pandemic, which provided new insights and brought to the forefront a range of issues related to the spread, progression, and control of infections.  Meanwhile, the book’s specialised section presents a contemporary perspective on specific diseases, including current topics in modern infectious disease practice (such as prosthetic infections). The authors have not attempted to simplify certain controversial or ambiguously interpreted findings; instead, these have deliberately been left for the reader’s consideration, encouraging deeper understanding and professional discussion.

A special highlight of the book is the Insolitam (“unusual”) section included for each disease, which compiles unusual, interesting, or as yet unexplained facts related to the respective topic. This element adds not only a scientific but also an intellectually engaging dimension to the publication.

The authors hope that the book will serve as a useful resource for both medical students and physicians, particularly specialists whose work is not directly related to infectious diseases, as well as other healthcare professionals. This publication broadens understanding of infectious diseases, the importance of prevention, and the changing nature of the natural world in the context of infectious diseases.

The publication of such a book is particularly important today, as infectious diseases remain one of the most significant public health challenges. They affect a large part of society and highlight the importance of knowledge, vigilance, and understanding of the role of prevention.
