RSU Psychology Days began with book launch
At the opening of the annual Psychology Days at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) on 7 October, the Department of Health Psychology and Pedagogy presented two new RSU publications – Psihoonkoloģija (Psycho-Oncology), written by Dr. med. Velga Sudraba and Jana Duhovska, and Garīguma dimensiju daudzveidība mūsdienās: starpdisciplināra perspektīva (The Diversity of Spiritual Dimensions in Modern Times: An Interdisciplinary Perspective), scientific editor Prof. Kristīne Mārtinsone. These works offer fresh insights into the intersections between psychology and healthcare.
At the opening, RSU Prof. Mārtinsone emphasised that Psychology Days provide an opportunity to strengthen the connection between science, practice, and society. ‘The launch of these books demonstrates that our scientific thinking is becoming part of a broader professional discourse that influences both research and practical work.’
The authors Psihoonkoloģija introduce psycho-oncology, which is a relatively new discipline in Latvia. It focuses on emotional support for cancer patients and their families throughout the course of treatment. The book emphasises that emotional support and quality communication reduces anxiety and the risk of mental disorders, improve understanding of the diagnosis, and promote treatment adherence. In view of the latest studies, the book offers evidence-based interventions aimed at reducing emotional burden, strengthening internal resources, and fostering mutual support. It is a practical guide for medical professionals, psychologists and patients.
During the event, a greeting from the Minister of Health, Hosams Abu Meri, was read, in which he emphasised the importance of psychology in healthcare: ‘This first step – writing a book in Latvian on psycho-oncology – is truly commendable. It focuses on solutions, hope, and preparation for various life scenarios in the event of an oncological illness.’
The book Garīguma dimensiju daudzveidība mūsdienās: starpdisciplināra perspektīva brings together the perspectives of 33 authors who explore the spiritual dimension through the lenses of science, art, and personal experience. Each chapter begins with an introduction to the author’s standpoint, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the author’s world of thought. The publication invites readers to explore the diversity of human experience and to broaden their horizons both academically and personally. Its structure enables readers to compare various perspectives on spirituality and discover previously unfamiliar viewpoints.
‘This book is an invitation to think, feel, and embrace the richness of the human experience,’ emphasised the book’s scientific editor, Prof. Mārtinsone, wishing the book a beautiful and inspiring journey to its readers.
The book launch celebration became an uplifting event – a meeting of authors, readers, and peers, filled with kindness, joy, and gratitude for the work accomplished together.
