On 27 February, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) hosted the launch event for a new gynaecology textbook. The publication was produced by the RSU Publishing Unit and marks a significant step in the development of modern gynaecological literature based in the Latvian academic environment.

The scientific editor of the book is Jana Žodžika, Associate Professor at the RSU Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Lead Researcher at the RSU Institute of Public Health. The aim of the publication is to provide fundamental knowledge in gynaecology and to offer innovative approaches to disease diagnosis and treatment, as well as to highlight the importance of preventive care in women’s healthcare.

The textbook combines theoretical and practical knowledge, based on the achievements of modern medicine and the recommendations of experienced professionals. The book is intended for medical students, residents, midwives, gynaecologists and obstetricians, general practitioners and doctors of other specialties who wish to gain in-depth knowledge of women’s healthcare.

The structure of the new publication is based on anatomical principles – chapters are arranged according to the structure of female reproductive organs, with particular attention paid to the aetiology, diagnosis, and treatment of both benign and malignant pathologies. The book also includes separate chapters on reproductive endocrinology, family planning, pelvic floor dysfunction, pelvic pain, female sexuality, as well as eating and psycho-emotional disorders that affect gynaecological health. Pathologies characteristic of children and adolescents are also discussed separately.

The authors of each chapter, who are mostly RSU teaching staff, are experts in their field in Latvia. The book was peer-reviewed by Prof. Dace Rezeberga, Head of the RSU Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Margarita Puķīte, Asst. Prof. at the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences of the University of Latvia.

Particular attention was paid to the translation of medical terms into Latvian. In cooperation with the State Language Centre, accurate and appropriate terminology was ensured, promoting the use of professional language in medical practice and strengthening the role of the Latvian language in the academic environment.

The new publication continues the tradition of gynaecological textbooks published in Latvia, initiated by Prof. Gunta Lazdāne and Prof. Ilze Vīberga, and marks a new, modern stage in the development of the field.
