The Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH) in Great Britain has a history dating back 25 years and its activity is devoted to setting standards and quality criteria for sexual and reproductive healthcare. This non-governmental organisation brings together medical practitioners from different professional backgrounds, midwifes, public health nurses, researchers and academic staff.

Every year the FSRH organises a scientific conference in a different city in the United Kingdom focusing on the outcomes of latest research and current issues in the area of sexual and reproductive health. This year’s conference was held on 17 – 18 May in Birmingham.

From 2019, relationships and sex education will be compulsory in all British schools. Because of the upcoming changes, Sexual Education was one of the main topics of this year’s conference. The organisers had invited Prof. Gunta Lazdāne (pictured) to share the experience of the World Health Organization and other European countries, Latvia among them, on this topic. Of the 200+ participants at the conference, Prof. Gunta Lazdāne was the only foreign expert. Her presentation evoked many questions both during the session and afterwards; the professor was also invited to publish her presentation in the professional journal BMJ Sexual and Reproductive Health.

The conference acknowledged that the United Kingdom still has many unresolved issues and that sexual and reproductive health is an area that receives parliamentary and governmental support.

Experience-sharing is valuable for both observers as well as organisers of the conference and the FSRH is looking forward to visiting RSU and Latvia in the future. The research outcomes of the 2018 conference on sexual and reproductive health would be a good opportunity to strengthen cooperation.
