Learning environment

Studies take place in an efficient, positive, open and collaborative atmosphere. Lecture rooms are equipped with modern, up-to-date equipment that enables an efficient study process. Students are provided with comfortable workplaces for independent work outside the auditoriums. Here they can prepare for classes on university premises as well as work on individual and group tasks. It is possible to study and work independently outside the university using an e-learning platform. All course materials as well as all required and recommended readings are collected in one place and available on the platform.

Students have the opportunity to apply for Erasmus+ exchange programmes throughout their studies.

Content

Individual study courses are taught in English.
1st year

In the first year, students learn about economic and management science theory, the historical development thereof and current trends. This knowledge will then be used to analyse, interpret and address both theoretical and practical economic and management problems. Students will learn to collect, summarise and systematise information, tackle tasks, classify data, apply quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods, define a problem, conduct qualitative and quantitative research and offer reasoned, research-based solutions.

Courses in the first year: Theory of Microeconomics, Introduction to the Theory of Law, Practical Entrepreneurship, Theory of Macroeconomics, Basics of Accounting, Statistics, Research Methodology in Economics, Business Communication and Ethics, Basics of Finances.

2nd year

In the second year, students will gain in-depth knowledge of international marketing management processes and international advertising. This knowledge will be useful for working creatively and to achieve business goals in today's changing environment. Students will learn to work both individually and in a team, as well as develop their ability to discuss international business management problems in a reasoned way.

During this study year, students undergo placements that allow them to develop their professional skills and use theoretical knowledge to carry out practical tasks. The university has signed contracts with a number of employers that provide students with placement opportunities.

3rd year

In the third year, students will gain knowledge and skills that will help them choose a specialisation and promote learning about various elements in marketing sphere. Based on the theoretical knowledge and practical skills that they have acquired over the previous years, students will be able to carry out analytical research independently in order to find out changes in consumer preferences and needs.

Students' professionalism and creative potential are aided by regular guest lectures given by marketing and advertising professionals from Latvia and abroad. Among these are recognised and awarded specialists, scientists, heads of public institutions, managers of small and medium-sized businesses, and international organisations. RSU has a close cooperation with the Latvian Art Directors Club, which is managed by an RSU graduate. Off-site seminars to various Latvian companies will also take place over the course of the programme.

Methods

The study process in this programme is organised according to a modular system, including lectures, seminars, practical classes, and independent work. There is an emphasis on independent work, which will include reading and analysing scientific literature, writing summaries and essays, preparing reports and projects, and preparing and presenting semester papers and group projects. The aim of these methods is to help students develop the ability to analyse economic situations critically, evaluate and model the development of these situations in the future logically and to develop skills for team work and even team management.

If you want to study marketing and advertising, RSU is definitely the best place to do so. Most of all, I appreciate the modular system and the fact that the lecturers are encouraging. Although there is a lot of independent work it has taught me self-discipline and I can now absorb new material better.  I am currently applying what I have learned in practice both when I created my own company and by working in sales.

Once you have decided that marketing and advertising is the field where you want to get your higher education, studying this course is the right choice. The university helps you lay a solid foundation through innumerable written tasks, a huge literature base, and all the problems that you will be required to solve, whereas in the labour market everything will depend on your own initiative! Thank you RSU for helping me develop an awareness of the importance of constant knowledge-building and teaching me not to be afraid to compete internationally.
