On 22 and 23 July, 192 applicants to the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Latvian Academy of Sport Education (LASE) – 113 men and 79 women – took part in physical fitness entrance exams to compete for a place in the RSU LASE Sports Science professional bachelor’s programme. Due to the high level of competition for the 90 scholarship places, the atmosphere was slightly tense at times. However, over the two days, the applicants also experienced many positive emotions about their performance, the results they achieved, and the friendships they made.

This year’s entrance exam was notable for several reasons. It was the first time the exam was held in RSU Inspiration Park and the Riga Jānis Šteinhauers Secondary School stadium, located in Pārdaugava – RSU’s main campus. In addition, it was the first time that applicants planning to pursue part-time studies also took part in the entrance exam.

Prospective students completed six physical fitness tests over two days, in accordance with the assessment criteria developed by RSU LASE. These included a standing long jump, a 20-metre sprint, a shuttle run, and sit-ups. In addition, female applicants completed a 2-kilometre cross-country run and a strength endurance test involving push-ups, while male applicants completed a 3-kilometre cross-country run and pull-ups.

The applicants admitted that the cross-country run and strength tests were the most physically demanding parts of the exam, but the friendly atmosphere, professional organisation, and support from the lecturers made the experience easier. Many applicants got to know each other during the two days and made friends, laying the foundation for future cooperation in their studies.

RSU LASE lecturers acknowledged that young people are generally responsible and prepare for entrance exams in a timely manner, although some applicants will need to work further on their physical fitness during their studies. Nevertheless, everyone agreed that the exam went well and a motivating start for students starting their studies in the Sports Science programme.
