Half a year has already passed since 1 July 2024 when Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) and the Latvian Academy of Sport Education (LASE) started on their joint path of development, creating a unified health and sport science ecosystem that will ensure high-quality, internationally competitive, research-based higher education and good governance.

Starting this year, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) is offering students the opportunity to use classrooms for individual or group work at times when no classes or lectures are scheduled. As part of the pilot project, several classrooms will be opened, and more may follow. This has been decided in order to introduce new ways of supporting students in their studies. Students have many individual and group projects, as well as regular tests, for which they often have to prepare by working together.

Children and teenagers are spending more and more time on their smart devices. Why is excessive phone use harmful, and what can we do to find a happy medium without harming children's health or hindering the development of their digital skills? What should parents do, what methods should they use? How will the amendments to the Education Law, which will ban phone use in schools in grades 1-6 starting with the upcoming school year, affect pupils and teachers? 

RSU Prof. Dr Mirjam Blattner will give a lecture on "Precision medicine for paediatric cancer care. The more we know the better we can treat" on 30 January at 16:00 at the Children’s Clinical University Hospital's Children and Youth Mental Health Centre (3rd floor).

We are deeply saddened to announce that Rolands Gibners, assistant and former Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Faculty of Medicine, orthopaedic traumatologist and spine surgeon, has passed away after a serious illness.

Born in Riga on 2 February 1958, he worked at RSU from 1993 to 2023, and from 2003 to 2009 he was Head of the Department of Orthopaedics.

RSU signs institutional funding agreement with Ministry of Education and Science and Ministry of Health

On 15 January, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU), the Ministry of Education and Science (MoES) and the Ministry of Health (MoH) signed an agreement on the implementation of institutional funding. This initiative is an important milestone in the modernisation of Latvia's higher education system and a step for RSU to achieve its strategic goals by providing more flexibility in planning how budget funds are allocated and increased efficiency in preparing specialists required by the national economy.

The year has started with exciting news: Tampa General Hospital's (TGH) Transplant Institute, where Rīga Stradiņs University (RSU) Council Member Gundars Katlaps serves as Co-Director of Aortic Surgery, Surgical Director of Lung Transplantation, and Chief of the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Section at TGH, has officially been ranked first in the US by transplant volume for 2024.
