Viboosani Murugaboopathy's family originally comes from the state of Tamil Nadu in India, which is in the south-east of the Indian subcontinent, but she was born and brought up in Dresden, Germany. Viboosani started studying medicine at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) in 2015, and just graduated in February 2021.
The RSU T-shirt design contest ended in February and Karīna Makrjakova was announced as the winner. Karīna is from Aglona and studies Audio and Speech Therapy at the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Faculty of Rehabilitation. She enjoys doodling on her study notes. ‘This time, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and participate in the T-shirt design contest. On 23-25 February, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) received both remote and in person visits by a group of Latvian and international experts and a representative from the Quality Agency for Higher Education to receive accreditation for the RSU Management, Administration and Real Estate Management study field. The experts’ visit is an important stage in evaluating a study field at RSU, which is the first part of the accreditation process.
On 17 March, the research centre SKDS started to implement an extensive survey of Latvian journalists led by researchers from the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Faculty of Communication. The study's main objective is to assess the state of journalism today by analysing journalists’ professional opinions, the conditions and limitations that affect their work, and the functions of journalism. The survey is being carried out as part of the international study Worlds of Journalism Studies (WJS).
The broad program of this year’s Riga Stradiņš University (RSU) Research Week (RW2021) gathered a record-breaking audience, both in terms of participants as well as of countries represented. More than 1,300 research papers were presented at the five conferences by researchers from 45 countries bringing together a total of 6,463 participants. The first RSU Research Week in 2019 gathered about 6,000 visitors from 28 countries.
Recently, opinions have been voiced that international students in the Medicine and Dentistry study programmes significantly lower the quality of studies and that the number of international students should therefore be limited. This opinion also appears in a proposal by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Science for amendments to the Law on Higher Education Institutions, which recommends restricting the number of international students admitted to medical study programmes.
The theme of this year’s congress is medical education and the changes it has undergone due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To what extent has the pandemic affected medical education in different parts of the world? How is medical education currently organised? What future awaits current medical students? These and many other issues will be addressed at the sixth Call Me medical congress on 16-18 April this year.
Five international conferences, multiple plenary sessions, parallel sessions, poster sessions, master classes and even a hackathon – the week-long virtual Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Research Week 2021 will kick off on 22 March. All events are available to researchers and other interested persons, like industry, or government body representatives.
From 3-5 March, the Eurasian Higher Education Summit (EURIE 2021) brought together almost 3,000 delegates from 400 universities and higher education institutions in 65 countries. This year's summit took place online and focused on the impact of the pandemic on higher education around the world.
Jurgita Gailite will defend her doctoral dissertation on 24 October at 15:00 in an open meeting of the Clinical Medicine Degree Committee on in the Hippocrates Auditorium (16 Dzirciema iela) as well as on Zoom. Her dissertation is titled 'Risk Factors, Complications and Characteristics of Metabolic Syndrome in Obese Children and Adolescents'.
