The national examinations for Latvian and international students at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) were held from 27 to 29 May this year. Professor Peter Erich Goretzki (pictured), an endocrine surgery professor from Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, was appointed Deputy Chair of the National Examination Board this year. He was appointed to ensure that the 6th year students’ knowledge and skills meet the international standard and fulfil the requirements of leading European clinics and medical universities.
On 5 June the Latvian Medical and Dental Association (LĀZA) awarded several scholarships from the Professor Ilmārs Lazovskis' Memorial Foundation at the Pauls Stradiņš Museum for History of Medicine. A total of 7 000 USD was granted in financial aid this year. The scholarships were handed over by pysician Ēriks Niedrītis (USA), the Head of the foundation, as well as physician Edīte Lazovska who is the spouse of Ilmārs Lazovskis. Almost all scholarship recipients were students at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU).
From 31 May to 1 June Gemma Angel, a researcher and lecturer from the Department of Visual, Material and Museum Anthropology at the University of Oxford, visited the Anatomy Museum of Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) and worked with the museum’s collections.
The International Contemporary Art Fair ARTVILNIUS 2019 was held in Vilnius from 30 May to 2 June. Students from the Art Academy of Latvia and Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) participated with a joint exhibition. Both educational institutions have organised joint interdisciplinary projects and events since a cooperation agreement was established in spring 2018.
Oxford University Press is preparing to publish a handbook covering health politics in Europe with chapters on 37 countries, including some non-EU countries. The chapter on the Latvian healthcare system has been written by Edgars Eihmanis (pictured), researcher at the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Institute of Public Health, and doctoral student at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy.
The European Association of Schools of Occupational Medicine (EASOM) was founded to promote the highest standards of education and training in occupational medicine in Europe. This can be achieved through the exchange of knowledge, skills and experience of teaching and training between participating schools.
The Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Annual Award for Researcher of the Year went to Assistant Professor Klāvs Sedlenieks from the Faculty of Communication at the Department of Communication Studies. Sedlenieks leads and conducts research on both international and local projects and actively participates in events aimed at popularising science. He is also the author or co-author of several publications and books.
On 28 May an awards ceremony was held to honour the sporting achievements of Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) students. About 50 people were commemorated in total – individual athletes and sports teams as well as coaches, including several international students. Almost 50 medals were won in various sports disciplines this year. One of the biggest achievements was the Tet Riga Marathon that 205 runners, both RSU students and employees, participated in. Finnish student Jaakko Nieminen ended up winning first place in the 10-kilometre race!
