On 24 May practical courses called Insight into Contemporary Cardiothoracic Surgery were held for students of the Faculty of Medicine at the Senate Hall of Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU). The courses are organised by the Cardiac Surgery Centre of Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital (PSCUH) for the second consecutive year in cooperation with the company Johnson & Johnson and the RSU Student Union.
After winning two silver medals in 2017 and 2018, Jaakko Nieminen triumphed at the 10-kilometer race at this year’s Tet Riga Marathon, making friends and supporters from two countries proud at the same time – his home country Finland and his study destination Latvia. Medical studies are so challenging that high athletic achievements might seem unattainable. Well, Jaakko is proof that it is possible.
By investing 3.24 million euros of its own funds Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) plans to start construction on a multifunctional study centre at the Children’s Clinical University Hospital in 2019. The investment will be a new step in the development of RSU that will benefit not only prospective and existing doctors but also patients. This is the first time such a centre will be constructed at a Latvian hospital in the history of RSU.
The national exams in Clinical Medicine were held from 27 to 29 May within the frame of the summer examination session of the RSU Faculty of Medicine’s 2018/2019 academic year. The exams are a way to assess the knowledge and the practical skills of 6th year students from the Faculty of Medicine. After successfully passing the exams students will obtain a medical doctor’s degree as well as a professional qualification.
Distinguished Swedish plastic surgeon, Dr. Charles Randquist, will be giving a lecture at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) on 8 June at 14:45. The lecture is organised by the Swedish medical student association in Riga (SLFSUR) in cooperation with the International Student Association (RSU ISA). Dr. Randquist will talk about his 25-year experience in the field of plastic surgery, and his road in getting to where he is today.
The seminar Immunotherapy of Cancer will take place on 13 June at Rīga Stradiņš University. The seminar is part of the project 'New approach to active immunotherapy of Hepatitis C related cancer' (LZP-2018/2-0308).
The seminar will be conducted in English.
A medical art workshop took place at the Art Academy of Latvia on 21-23 May. It was lead by British medical artist Andrew Carnie.
The workshop was intended for students from the Academy and from RSU who were encouraged to focus on contemporary technology and the possibilities that it opens up, as well as to speculate on the anatomy of people in the future. During the workshop students were able to familiarise themselves with Carnie's methods, his experience working with scientists, as well as to make their own Anatomy & Beyond medical art project.
Julia Volonts, an art therapist from New York, will carry out research at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) from September 2019 to May 2020. The researcher received the prestigious Fulbright scholarship that she will make full use of to analyse the psychological impact caused by historical events on individuals and on Latvian society, as well as how the impact of these events are transferred from one generation to the next.
