Objective

The course will introduce some of the most important theoreticians in the fields of ideology, media and communication theories, as well as their analytical models and the conceptual apparatus used in relation to the analysis, forecasting and commenting of contemporary societal problems.

Prerequisites

Introduction to Communication Theories.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

• To get to know the social theories of leading humanities analysts;
• to be able to analyse and evaluate contemporary social situations;
• to identify the most characteristic social problems of the contemporary situation.

Skills

Students have to acquire the skills to analyse processes in society in the context of Latvia in the following scheme: Sign-Culture-Society; symptomatology and prevention, and skills to theorise on contemporary social issues within different conceptual schemes.

Competence

As a result of attending the course, students must develop an understanding of the possibilities of analysing the contemporary social situation in the various paradigms of the humanities: anthropologically, semiotically, and simply critically.
