Objective

To obtain knowledge of structure, function and classification of periodontal diseases. To obtain knowledge and practical skills in periodontology for diagnostic and treatment of the oral diseases.

Prerequisites

Students must have knowledge in oral anatomy, physiology, histology, microbiology and prevention of oral diseases.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
- describe the causal factors of the diseases of tooth supporting tissue as well as predisposing factors of periodontal diseases;
- interpret pathogenesis of periodontal diseases;
- formulate main principles of the periodontal treatment and it`s sequence.

Skills

1.On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- perform periodontal examination of the patient;
- interpret the data of the periodontal examination;
- create the plan of initial treatment of the patient;
- perform removal of soft plaque and scaling of the hard deposits from the root surface as well as root planing;
- motivate and instruct patients in proper individual oral hygiene;
- evaluate the need of specialised periodontal treatment.

Competence

1.On successful completion of the course students will be able to apply the knowledge and practical skills in periodontology for diagnostics and treatment of the oral diseases.
