History of the sports complex

The first school in Taurene Parish, which was located closer to the Gauja bridge, was built in 1857. It was a one-story wooden building, which unfortunately burned down in 1867. Immediately, the local nobleman Panders donated land for the establishment of the school in a place near Stupēni Lake. A one-story brick building was built there, the construction of which used broken stones from the nearby Elku Hill. In 1887, the second floor was built for the school from bricks purchased from the nearby Joku brick kiln, and a tiled roof was put on. Later, there were also apartments for teachers on the second floor.

In 1921, a fire broke out in the parish school again. When the building was renovated, a third floor was built of wood. During the Soviet years (1955), the building suffered another fire, after which it stood empty for three years. After the renovation, the Taurene Elementary School operated in it until 1973.

The first Rīga Medical Institute (RMI) sports and recreation camp in Taurene was organized in 1958. At first, students, as well as RMI teachers and employees, lived in tents, which they pitched every summer in the meadow near the Taurene Elementary School. But in 1973, 10 wooden summer houses (pictured) were built next to the old parish school building. A year later, five more. At that time, the old parish school building also became the property of RMI.

The adventures of the Rīga Medical Institute’s sports and recreation camp in Taurene were first described in the RMI newspaper “Padomju mediķis” on June 19, 1962.
