After graduating from high school, Signe Tomsone’s combined interests in sports and medicine led her to the University of Tartu where she became a sports medicine doctor. After returning to Latvia and continuing her studies at RSU (then – the Riga Medical Institute), Tomsone chose a career in occupational therapy. She is now the Dean of the Faculty of Rehabilitation at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU).

At that time, several modified programmes, including occupational therapy, were just being created and developed in Latvia. This was possible thanks to cooperation with foreign specialists, including from Sweden.

After completing her doctoral studies and defending her doctoral thesis at RSU, Tomsone worked as a guest researcher. After winning a competition she was able to conduct her postdoctoral research at Lund University in Sweden. The Associate Professor acknowledges that the experience she gained at Lund University continues to be very useful in leading the Faculty of Rehabilitation at RSU.
