RSU hosts academy for young public health professionals
On 12 March 2026, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) hosted an informative and interactive event aimed at exploring the field of public health. The event brought together young people and other interested participants who wanted to learn more about the importance of public health in society, career opportunities, and the day-to-day work in this field.
The day began with participant registration and a friendly introduction. During the opening part of the programme, Asst. Prof. Solvita Kļaviņa-Makrecka and Assoc. Prof. Anda Ķīvīte Urtāne provided an overview of the history, development, and main areas of activity in public health. Participants also took part in a discussion on how public health influences everyday life and tested their knowledge in the interactive quiz ‘Myths and Facts about Public Health.’
The highlight of the day was a simulation session, during which lecturer Lāsma Škestere explained the nature of public health crises and the role of specialists in addressing them. In the practical simulation, participants took on different roles, made decisions, and collaboratively resolved crisis situations, thereby gaining a realistic understanding of professional challenges.
After the lunch break, participants analysed the course of the simulation, evaluated myths and stereotypes about the work of public health specialists, and discussed the conclusions. At the end of the event, Asst. Prof. Kļaviņa-Makrecka provided in-depth information on study and career opportunities in the field of public health.
The event was a valuable and inspiring experience both for those already interested in public health and for those who are still exploring their future professional path.
