In the recently published Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2023, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) has improved its position and moved up 100 places, thus becoming the second highest ranked university in the field of sustainability in Latvia. RSU ranks 201-300 among the best universities in the world in the ranking, which is based on the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The number of universities included in the ranking increases every year. THE Impact Rankings 2023 ranked 1,591 universities from 112 countries.

One of RSU’s main priorities is to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals, taking into account both the historical development of the university and its current strategic activities in medical education and research.

RSU is a responsible organisation and sustainability issues permeate our mission to ensure the creation, accumulation and transfer of internationally recognised knowledge, offer excellent and inclusive educational opportunities and contribute to the development of society. This year's high ranking in the field of sustainability is very gratifying for our community of researchers, academic staff, students and administration.

Prof. Aigars Pētersons, RSU Rector

THE Impact Rankings is an international ranking that assesses the impact of universities on the environment, economy and society, and is designed to promote sustainable development worldwide. The ranking provides an overview of each university's overall position, as well as its spot in the individual Sustainable Development Goals.

  • This year, RSU performed best in the Good Health and Well-being category. RSU is ranked 57th in the world out of 1,218 universities. This category measures universities' research in medicine, their support for healthcare professions and the health of students and staff.
  • In the Gender Equality category, which covers university policies on gender equality, RSU is ranked 101st-200th in the world.
  • RSU's achievements are also highly rated in other categories: Decent Work and Economic Growth and Partnerships for the Goals.

THE Impact Rankings were first published in 2019, and since then the interest and number of universities has been growing rapidly every year. This shows that higher education institutions are increasingly succeeding at demonstrating their contribution to the SDGs. To compare and measure universities' contributions, their performance is assessed in four areas: research, stewardship, outreach and teaching. The Impact Rankings 2023 include five universities from Latvia: RSU, the University of Latvia, Riga Technical University, Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, and the Transport and Telecommunication Institute.
