Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) has been included in the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies Ranking 2022 for the first time. The University’s ranking at 115 is not only the best in Latvia, but also the highest ranking that a Latvian university has ever achieved in any THE ranking. This success is largely based on the quality of research at the University, and its international activity.

Overall, THE Emerging Economies Ranking 2022 ranked a total of 698 universities from 50 countries this year. Including RSU, Latvia is now represented by four universities. This year, the University of Latvia ranked 137, Riga Technical University ranked 251-300, while the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies ranked 501+. Five universities from Lithuania and four from Estonia are included in the ranking. The University of Tartu is the highest ranked, in 39th place.

The rating criteria have been adjusted to provide the most accurate assessment of the characteristics of universities in emerging economies. The criteria broadly cover five areas of higher education activity: learning environment (30%), research (30%), research quality (20%), international prospects (10%) and revenue from cooperation with industry (10%). RSU stands out among the universities in emerging economies due to the high and competitive results it receives in the fields of quality of scientific activity and international prospects, where it received the highest scores – 82.1 and 74.

‘I am proud that RSU has made an excellent start in all Times Higher Education rankings. These results show that our University is dynamic, international, and based on high research and academic standards.

One of the keys to our success on a global scale is undoubtedly our ability to attract international students. This is something we’ve been working on for decades, and we now have students from more than 60 countries,’ emphasises Prof. Aigars Pētersons, RSU Rector.

Earlier this academic year, it was announced that RSU had been included in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022 for the first time, ranking 501st-600th. No other Latvian university has ever ranked so high, and RSU’s result is the second best in the Baltic States.
