On 3 July, new results of an analysis of the best universities from the 13 European Union (EU) Member States that have joined the EU since 2004 (EU13) were released at the Times Higher Education (THE) European University Summit, which took place from 3 to 5 July in Warsaw (Poland). According to this analysis, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) ranks 14th of the top 30 universities.

The analysis shows that the top 30 EU13 universities are evenly spread across the region, with no single country dominating the ranking. The list represents higher education institutions from all EU13 countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

In the top EU13 list, Charles University (Czech Republic) is ranked first, the University of Tartu (Estonia) second, and Semmelweis University (Hungary) third. Latvia is represented by two universities — RSU and the University of Latvia, which is ranked 18th. Like Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania are represented by two universities each.

The methodology used to create the Top 30 EU13 universities is the same as in THE World University Rankings, but the indicators reflect a comparison of performance between EU13 universities rather than across the whole world.

David Watkins, THE Executive Director of Data Science points out that the performance of universities in these 13 European countries has improved over the last five years, particularly in attracting international students and in terms of reputation.

He added that the new data analysis

'focuses more on differences in research and teaching indicators, thus giving a different insight about universities compared to the world university rankings'.

This international assessment helps RSU to analyse its performance and identify its strengths and areas for improvement towards academic and scientific excellence.
