World-renowned periodontology expert Prof. Mariano Sanz visits RSU Institute of Stomatology

Thanks to the support of the Riga Stradiņš University (RSU) Doctoral School, the world-renowned periodontology expert Prof. Mariano Sanz from the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain) and the University of Oslo (Norway) visited the RSU Institute of Stomatology on 7 November 2025.

During the visit, Prof. Sanz gave a lecture titled “Periodontal regenerative interventions” dedicated to the topic of periodontal regeneration – a highly relevant and significant area in modern periodontology. The event gathered approximately 60 attendees, including most Latvian periodontologists as well as residents, doctoral students, and dentistry students. The lecture was held in a professional and inspiring setting, sparking discussions on the latest trends in periodontal regeneration and various clinical approaches.

During his visit to the Institute of Stomatology, Prof. Sanz was shown the clinic’s facilities and equipment. He expressed high appreciation for the infrastructure, stating that the university has a professional and modernly equipped clinic that provides all the necessary conditions to perform even complex periodontal surgeries.

This event was an important step in the development of Latvian periodontology, as it not only provided new knowledge and inspiration, but also opened the door to future cooperation with Prof. Sanz. There was a discussion about the professor returning to the Institute of Stomatology to demonstrate surgical treatment techniques to periodontology residents. This opportunity would be extremely valuable for improving the quality of our clinical training.
