Two lectures on the relationship between state and kinship by two notable European anthropologists

Two open lectures by renowned anthropologists will take place at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) on 17 and 18 October 2019. The lectures will tackle the interaction between the state and kinship.

• 17 October at 11:15: Professor Tatjana Thelen from the University of Vienna will deliver an open lecture on the topic ‘State, Kinship, Care: An Anthropological Perspective’. The Professor will analyse the close relationship between the state, kinship and care, and highlight the fact that kinship is not only influenced by the state but also shapes political structures. • 18 October at 9:30: Thomas Zitelmann, a senior lecturer from the Freie Universität Berlin, will deliver the open lecture ‘Statehood, Politics and Kinship: An Ethiopianist Perspective on a Long Century of Traditions, Trends and Fashions in Anthropology’. The lecturer will report on the way in which social anthropology researchers have searched for, and are still searching for, the point of intersection of the formation of kinship, politics and the state throughout the century. Both lectures will take place in English.

The open lectures will take place within the frame of the RELATE.LV project (funded by the Latvian Council of Science) and the Baltic Anthropology Graduate School. The events are organised by the academic staff of the Social Anthropology Master’s programme of RSU.
