On 27 and 28 March this year, the International Student Conference (ISC23) in Health and Social Sciences took place for the 9th time at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU). The conference brought together more than 2,500 students from around the world interested in science and research. This year, after a 4-year pause, the conference was held in person again.

A total of 345 studies were presented at the conference of which 244 were in healthcare sessions, 59 were presented in 6 clinical case sessions (in internal diseases, surgery, oncology, neurology, and paediatrics), and 42 in social sciences sessions. Participants from 27 different countries around the world, including Estonia, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, presented their research, participated in workshops, and attended a variety of sessions.

Over a period of two days, students were not only able to participate in sessions with their own research, but also to listen and learn from panel discussions about topics such as “Artificial intelligence in medicine and science - friend or threat?” or “Virtual reality, digital ownership and decentration - dream or reality?”. Social science students were given access to the student podcast Skaļāk (Louder), the Faculty of Law organised a mock trial, and Fabian Lieb, one of the creators of the film Dear Future Children presented his film and was available for discussions and questions.

Conference attendees also had the opportunity to visit the RSU Anatomy Museum, play board games, participate in a scavenger hunt, and network with their fellow participants. Furthermore, they had the opportunity to enhance their practical skills through 23 different health sciences workshops in fields such as dermatovenerology, rheumatology, and radiology. There were also opportunities to participate in a simulation of a surgery in a simulated theatre, prepare an eye for surgery, and more. Additionally, 6 workshops were held in various social sciences fields, such as a workshop on climate justice in our daily actions by journalist and influencer Eva Johansone. Apart from the scientific and academic program, the conference also had a rich social agenda that included informal meetings for participants, dinners for foreign and local jury members and guest speakers, as well as a tour of the Institute of Organic Synthesis, and a session on creating effective presentations in collaboration with the RSU Department of International Business and Economics of the European Studies Faculty and the company White Label.

The conference culminated with the finals in the Grand Prix and Case Report Competitions where the best-rated works competed for the title of best study and best case report that came with a considerable money prize. Trifon Popov from Bulgaria won first place in the Grand Prix with a study titled “Montmorillonite-Cytochrome C Composite Nanoparticles With Selective Anticancer Effect For Treatment Of Neoplasms With Superficial Location” and the best case report of ISC23 went to RSU student Kristīne Lapšova whose report was titled “Salt-Losing Tubulopathy: A Gitelman Syndrome”.

You can find the full list of winners on the conference website.

We wish to express our gratitude to everyone who took part in RSU ISC23! The scientific jury of the conference and the organising team were delighted with the activity that participants showed and with the high level of all the research work presented.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the conference next year!

The RSU International Student Conference, which took place during RSU Research Week 2023, was organised by the RSU Student Union with the aim to promote research, share experience, and create new contacts. Over the years, ISC has become one of the largest student conferences in Northern Europe.
