Liene Ņikitina-Zaķe, the Director of the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Research Department, chose to apply for doctoral studies at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. She had previously worked there for a year as a visiting researcher in the molecular immunogenetics research team. As the research topics and activates in laboratories turned out to be very exciting, she sometimes found that work continued even until late in the evenings and on weekends.

Ņikitina-Zaķe understood the rules of the game already during her doctoral studies. She had a timeline for when her research should be completed, as the funding she received was not guaranteed after four years. Everything depends on determination and perseverance.

‘The research environment at RSU is at a very high level. There is a well-developed infrastructure, well-equipped laboratories that provide scientists with the widest range of opportunities,’ explains the Director of the RSU Research Department.
