The aim of the conference is to create a favourable environment in which to exchange ideas and hold discussions. The conference is organised by the Latvian Transatlantic Organisation in cooperation with the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Latvian Ministry of Defence.

The discussions at this year's conference will focus on a variety of security issues affecting international affairs today. The topics will cover current events such as the development of NATO work in its 70th year, shifts in Europe's political elite, how the digital age is transforming political power, Western relations with Russia, how the new superpowers are shaping their regions of influence, and so on.

Over the course of two days the Riga Conference will host 11 different discussion sessions in various formats. The guest list includes ministers, ambassadors and policy experts from several countries. This year's conference will be opened by Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš.

Since 2006, the conference has been a meeting place for countless national leaders and experts from around the world. Rīga Conference 2018 brought together the largest number of participants in the last decade - 650 participants from more than 40 countries.
