The Employers’ Confederation of Latvia (Latvijas Darba devēju konfederācija, LDDK) has awarded employers who paid special attention to ensuring that their employees could have a healthy work-life balance in 2021 with the Balance Award. The prize for the best support for employees with children under 18 was awarded to Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU). Part of the motivation was the university’s crèche, Namiņš, that has been available to staff for over seven years.

The staff are highly qualified, and the room is furnished and designed in a way that appeals to children with a wide variety of games and educational activities available. On average, 15 children per month use Namiņš, which amounts to 196 children a year.

The LDDK presented awards in six categories and a total of 38 companies participated. A jury made up of representatives from the LDDK, the Free Trade Union Confederation of Latvia, and the Ministry of Welfare evaluated the applications for the Balance Award 2021.

The following speakers shared inspirational stories on a healthy work-life balance and wellbeing at work:

  • PhD. Agita Lūse, social anthropologist, Assistant Professor at the RSU Faculty of Communication who specialises in medical and psychiatric anthropology (social aspects of disability and rehabilitation, etc.);
  • Baiba Baikovska, Head of the Ability Movement branch at Agape Latvija, RSU doctoral student and visiting lecturer;
  • Evija van der Beek, supervisor, personal growth and business development coach, leader of workshops on professional stress, burnout, and emotional intelligence, who has also lectured at RSU.
