RSU Receives Balance Award from the Employers’ Confederation of Latvia

The Employers’ Confederation of Latvia (Latvijas Darba devēju konfederācija, LDDK) has awarded employers who paid special attention to ensuring that their employees could have a healthy work-life balance in 2021 with the Balance Award. The prize for the best support for employees with children under 18 was awarded to Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU).

Their fields might range from pharmacy, biology, paediatrics, and neurology to art therapy and law, but they all share the ability to find time in their busy schedules to work on their pedagogical skills. After six months of extensive training, 25 academic staff members full of innovative ideas have just graduated from the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) School of Junior Academics – a unique platform in Latvian higher education for developing teaching skills.

Bachelor’s and master’s students at the RSU Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine are investigating how effective different types of office furniture, various workplace furnishings, and ergonomic aids are and how they affect employee health in the Ergonomic Workplaces in a Healthy Environment Vertically Integrated Project (VIP).

The evaluation of applications for the previous year’s Latvian Council of Science’s call for fundamental and applied projects was completed in December 2021. Seven projects, including one collaborative project, from the project applications submitted by Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) will be funded. The funding comes to a total of EUR 1,809,969.50 that will be allocated to RSU to carry out various scientific research over a three-year period.

Toms Mārtiņš Smilga

Toms Mārtiņš Smilga, a 5th-year student at the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Faculty of Medicine, recently became Chair of the Board of the RSU Student Union (SP, Studējošo pašpārvalde). Smilga comes from Aizpute, but he spent his high-school years in Liepāja. Although he has been playing volleyball since the 7th grade and initially planned to study law, he ended up studying medicine at RSU. He believes that RSU offers the best medical education in Latvia.

Prospective psychologists, art therapists, supervisors, public health specialists and others are participating in the Vertically Integrated Project (VIP) Psychological Help and Self-Help that is being implemented by the Department of Health Psychology and Paedagogy of Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU). The participants are developing course papers, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral theses, writing project applications, scientific and popular science articles, conference abstracts, as well as collaborating with colleagues from the Art Academy of Latvia.

RSU Researchers Develop Unique Skin Cream with Selenium

It would be hard to find a more competitive field than skincare. At the end of last December, a team of researchers from Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU), led by Professor Jūlija Voicehovska, successfully completed a project to create a cream that restores the barrier functions of facial skin. The skin cream has strong antioxidant properties, and the active substances are naturally occurring selenium, squalene, and vitamin E.
