Objective

To promote the acquisition of knowledge about the main gynaecological pathologies in different periods of a woman’s life, symptoms, diagnosis and differential diagnosis; as well as to develop an understanding of the application of examination methods and to develop the necessary practical skills for applying this knowledge in midwifery practice.

Prerequisites

Female anatomy, physiology, genetics, pathological anatomy, propaedeutics, internal diseases, general surgery, pharmacology, laboratory and functional diagnosis, radiology, health care organisation and medical ethics.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

To name and describe the principles of the organisation of gynaecological assistance, to be able to present and explain the anatomy and physiology of the female genital organs. To describe the main gynaecological diseases of the adolescent period (juvenile bleeding, anorexia, bulimia), the main gynaecological pathologies in the reproductive period (ectopic pregnancy, menstrual cycle disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome, premenstrual syndrome, dysmenorrhea, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, benign tumours of the genital organs, precancerous diseases and cancer), the main gynaecological pathologies in menopause (climacteric syndrome, genital prolapse, urinary incontinence). Able to perform differential diagnosis in case of acute abdomen in gynaecology. To name contraception methods, explain indications and side effects thereof.

Skills

As a result of completing the study course, the student has learned and practically knows how to:
- take a woman’s reproductive history;
- explain the physiology of the menstrual cycle to a woman;
- explain to a woman the reasons for the occurrence of normal and pathological vaginal discharge and the possibilities of differential diagnosis thereof;
- examine the cervix in mirrors, perform cervical cytology and take vaginal smears for examination of microflora;
- perform breast examination;
- advise a healthy woman on the choice of contraceptive methods, their mechanism of action and safety.

Competence

As a result of acquiring theoretical and practical knowledge, the student is able to:
- perform cytology for the diagnosis of cervical cancer;
- take vaginal smears and cultures for determining the microflora;
- perform a bimanual examination of the uterus and uterine appendages;
- identify the main gynaecological pathologies;
- advise women on the choice of contraceptive methods.
