Study course description
Preliminary Knowledge: | Knowledge in biology, physiology, pathology and pharmacy courses completed.
Objective: | To provide knowledge on the acute exogenous intoxication epidemiology, toxicokinetics, toxicodynamics and characteristics of the specific and most urgent (more common poisoning causes and / or high toxicity grade), poisonous substances with recommended principles of treatment and, as well to teach students to act in acute, life-threatening toxicological situations before arrival emergency service.
Topic Layout (Full-Time)
No. | Topic | Type of Implementation | Number | Venue
1 | Clinical toxicology and its place in the field of medicine, toxicological epidemiology. Potential contamination pathways and risk of toxic compounds. General considerations of toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics | Lectures | 1.00 | auditorium
2 | General treatment principles of acute poisoning, possible effects and prognosis. Extracorporeal elimination methods of toxic compounds. Antidotes and appropriate using of them. Methods of gastrointestinal decontamination and treatment protocol of GIT poisoning | Lectures | 1.00 | auditorium
3 | Hepatotoxicity and alcohol liver disease. Toxicity of household chemical products. Toxicological risks of nutritional supplements, and their interactions with medicines | Lectures | 1.00 | auditorium
4 | Toxicological risks for the woman and during the pregnancy. Addictive substances ("old" and "new"), including synthetic cannabinoids and nicotine | Lectures | 1.00 | auditorium
5 | Specific substance toxicology (toxicological characteristic, toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics, the severity of toxicity, poisoning clinical manifestations and treatment recommendations) - ethanol and alcohol substitutes, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, neuroleptics and antidepressants | Classes | 1.00 | auditorium
6 | Specific substance toxicology (toxicological characteristic, toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics, the severity of toxicity, poisoning clinical manifestations and treatment recommendations) – CO and cyanides, NSAID, paracetamol | Classes | 1.00 | auditorium
Assessment | |||||||||
Unaided Work: | Preparing presentations using the recommended literature and Internet sources, following evaluation and analysis in practical lessons.
Assessment Criteria: | Test (multi-answer test and oral questions on the course topic). Evaluation criteria in the theoretical multi-answer test: more than 75% of correct answers.
Final Examination (Full-Time): | Exam
Final Examination (Part-Time):
Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | During the study course the students will complement the knowledge of clinical toxicology - toxicologically the most pressing substances, their toxicities, and treatment options.
Skills: | The student will be able to: To assess the seriousness of the health condition of the poisoned person.
Competencies: | Students will be able to use the acquired competencies on the risk factors of acute exogenous intoxication, epidemiology, the amount of immediate medical care for an acute toxicological patient, linking it to the specific clinical situation.
