Study course description
Preliminary Knowledge:
In public health, ethics, psychology, understanding of the functioning of the human physical body, physical and mental health and illness.
Objective:
To provide basic information and build the understanding of future public health specialists about the global, local and individual problems of ageing, recognition thereof, social, medical and psychobiological aspects for ensuring a good quality of life in old age, creating public understanding of the basic principles and techniques for promoting active ageing, for the comprehensive functioning of the individual in society.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
When elaborating on the selected topic, developing the presentation and using the available sources of information, to include the experience and vision of Latvian and foreign specialists in the formulation of public health strategic guidelines for seniors.
Assessment Criteria:
1. Activity in lectures and classes, participating in discussions of topics developed by group members. 2. The full value of the description of the topic selected and developed by the student – problematic settings, solution algorithms, opportunities for improvement and paths thereof. 3. Quality of answers to colleagues’ and lecturer’s questions. 4. The exam grade consists of: 4.1. Participation in lectures and classes – 10%; 4.2. Accuracy of answers to the questions asked – 20%; 4.3. The quality of the developed topics and presentation thereof – 70%.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:Define the names, content and nature of terms used in gerontology and social gerontology; the basic concepts of promoting active ageing, explain the nature of ageing as a biopsychosocial phenomenon, name the hypotheses and theories of ageing; will know the prerequisites of healthy, active ageing, application thereof in order to ensure good quality of life at any stage of ageing.
Skills:To carry out an analysis of ageing society in the context of the development of preventive measures in order to promote active ageing, choosing the most suitable strategy for achieving this goal.
Competencies:The ability to prepare a target group as well as an individual plan for the promotion of healthy ageing, develop early indicators of the ageing process, and apply correction tools in pathological ageing situations.
