Study course description
Preliminary Knowledge:
Knowledge of biology, epidemiology, clinical pharmacology, microbiology, histology, anatomy, propaedeutics, genetics, knowledge of the state language.
Objective:
• To promote awareness of oncological diseases as a significant controllable public health problem. • To promote the acquisition of knowledge about tumor biology and pathogenesis in a modern sense. • To acquire knowledge about tumor diagnostic methods and disease prevalence assessment. • To master the basic principles of diagnosis and treatment of malignancies of breast, colon and rectum. • To master the diagnosis and therapy of oncological emergencies. • To master the pathogenesis of chronic pain syndrome, basic principles of diagnosis and treatment of oncology patients.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
Individual work with literature (lung, skin, prostate, breast, colorectal, gastric cancer, gynecological and urological tumours) and patients – collection of anamnesis and preparation of a report.
Assessment Criteria:
Each student reports on patients with various oncological diseases, thus demonstrating the ability to communicate with the cancer patient, collect a targeted medical, life and family history, evaluate and criticize mistakes in the patient's current care, interpret different differential diagnostic options and justify the planned treatment to the clinical situation. At the end of the course students prepare a presentation about one topic, which makes 50% of the final mark. As well as written multiple choice (MCQ) exam to test student's knowledge of tumor epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment options, accounting for the other 50% of the final mark.
Final Examination (Full-Time):Exam (Written)
Final Examination (Part-Time):
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:After successful completion of the study course requirements, students will have acquired knowledge that will allow: Understand, define and outline the concepts of descriptive epidemiology of the most common tumours – incidence, mortality, prevalence, five-year survival, relative and attributable risk. Describe and classify primary, secondary and tertiary tumor prevention methods. To gain an understanding of the carcinogenesis of the tumour, the ways of spread, the course of development and the possibilities of influencing it. Distinguish, evaluate and apply tumor diagnostic methods. Use TNM and other tumour classification methods. To formulate the effectiveness of different tumour therapy methods, indications, contraindications and combination possibilities. Recognize and evaluate strong emotional responses and integrate this knowledge into contact with cancer patients and their relatives.
Skills:Name and sequentially rank the most common tumours in Latvia, as well as formulate and systematize risk factors for various tumours. Ability to analyze the role of various genetic and epigenetic factors in tumor development at the individual and societal level. Collect targeted life, harmful factors and family history of cancer patients. Use the TNM classification to describe the prevalence of the disease. To evaluate the possibilities of tumour therapy depending on the spread of the disease. Delivering of negative and disturbing information.
Competencies:Understanding and ability to evaluate, compare and interpret tumor epidemiological data, biology, disease prevalence (stages), diagnostic and therapeutic options. Ability to anticipate and solve communication problems in work with cancer patients and their relatives.
