Study course description
Preliminary Knowledge:
Prior knowledge in propedeutics, pathology, anatomy, pharmacology, immunology, dermatology, biochemistry. Students should be familiar with the subject matter learned in previous internal disease courses.
Objective:
The aim of the course is to consolidate the students' theoretical knowledge and practical skills of the most common chronic pathologies in adults, acquired during different study years at RSU Department of Internal diseases, to prepare students for further practical work, to teach in practice the necessary examination methods, manipulation in the examination of patients with endocrine, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, nephrological, respiratory, oncological and hematological diseases. Students are able to evaluate patient's symptoms, determine the diagnosis, the range of examinations required, evaluate the results of laboratory, radiological and functional examinations, stratify risks and develop a treatment plan. Practice rotation is a practical and integrative medical study organization format for medical teams.
Assessment
Unaided Work:
During the rotation of internal disease practice student should work in internal disease profile units in an inpatient, internal disease profile practice in an outpatient medical setting, or in a GP practice. During the practice rotation the student performs the duties of a medical assistant, taking into account the student's professional knowledge and skills acquired and evaluated during the previous study period: under the supervision of a doctor, is able to orientate in the results of bronchoscopy, functional tests of the lungs. The student assists and provides support to a physician - practice rotation supervisor in patient mentoring, performing practical manipulations, completing medical records, and other activities. In addition to the practical work the student should read the special literature according to the course description.
Assessment Criteria:
The overall assessment of the practice consists of the student's characterization from the practice workplace, as well as the evaluation commission's assessment after discussion with the student, which includes an analysis of one clinical case from the practice rotation, also probable situation, when the student would have acted differently. For the placement test, the student's knowledge and skills are considered to be successful if they correspond to a pass test. The practice test can be taken twice. The content of the activity performed by the student (diagnoses, manipulations and other activities of the curative patients) must be presented in the relevant sections of the practice rotation portfolio, which is signed by the doctor-supervisor (mentor) of rotation.
Final Examination (Full-Time):Defence (Placement)
Final Examination (Part-Time):
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:As a result of the course acquisition the student will acquire knowledge and will be able to analyze and understand clinical, laboratory and visual examination methods of patients of different profiles. They will know and recognize the symptoms and algorithms of various diseases – investigation and treatment tactics, patient safety and clinical risk management, will be able to recommend evidence based recommendations, will be able to apply critical thinking and synthesize knowledge.
Skills:Will be able to collect history, perform physical examination of patients, evaluate patient's vital signs (i.e. patient's state of consciousness, breathing, heart rate, central and peripheral pulse, arterial blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation, body temperature, diuresis), recognize hemodynamically unstable patients, administrate examinations and therapies, diagnose the patient, educate the patient on health and disease prevention issues, provide emergency care, draw up medical records, use information and communication technologies, observe general and professional ethics, organize one's own and teamwork. Students will be able to educate patients on rational use of medicines, possibilities of disease prevention, public health issues. Will be able to express sympathy in the conversation with the patient / loved one, to express a reasoned opinion. Will be able to check patients' compliance with treatment recommendations.
Competencies:The acquired competencies of the study course will allow purposeful and structured examination of the patient's history, assessment of the patient's vital signs (namely, patient's state of consciousness, breathing, heart rate, central and peripheral pulse, arterial blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation, body temperature, diuresis) the components and symptomatology that affect it will allow the patient's health status to be evaluated, normality and deviation interpreted, and the finding and specific situation to be attributed, and the next tactic to be decided. It will allow to recognize acute medical conditions, to organize timely assistance, to interpret the results of various examinations and formulate the appropriate conclusions, to plan treatment tactics. The acquired competencies will allow to perform manipulations appropriate to the respective pathological condition, to write prescriptions, to fill in medical documentation in accordance with the requirements of regulatory enactments.
