Preliminary Knowledge:
Legal Theory, Philosophy of Law, History of Latvian Law.
Objective:
Learn the basics of sociology of law, legal methodology and cognition of the application of law.

Unaided Work:
Carrying out the research project and a presentation. Topics for independent research projects in the course “Sociology of Law”: 1 Influence of post-crisis period on legal procedure in Latvia. 2 Sociological assessment of draft amendments to the Criminal Law of the Republic of Latvia. 3 Assessment of the prevalence of domestic violence. 4 Practice and problems in application of preventive coercive measures. 5 Illegal migration: sociological assessment of causes and consequences. 6 Assessment of the situation, trends and consequences of illegal migration in Latvia. 7 Methods of cognition of the personality of minors and use of research results in social adjustment. 8 Options for adjusting minors in detention facilities. 9 Sociological assessment of the reorganisation of the State Police. 10 How to optimize the activities of the State Police - the aspect of sociological cognition. 11 How to build a professional career in the police - analysis of opinions. 12 Why the police isn’t respected? How to win trust? 13 The future of the police. The vision of policemen and the public. 14 A case of Imanta paedophile: analysis of the tactical activity of the police (analysis of the information in mass media). 15 Work in law enforcement authorities - goals and motives of the staff. 16 Police performance indicators. 17 Legal nihilism as a crime factor. 18 Legal dilettantism as a form of deformation of legal consciousness. 19 Legal infantilism as a form of deformation of legal consciousness. 20 Trends and determining factors in missing people cases in Latvia. 21 Probation Service. In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must fill out the study course evaluation questionnaire on the Student Portal.
Assessment Criteria:
In accordance with RSU Academic Regulations I, the final mark and the overall assessment consist of the sum of all marks. Knowledge will be assessed on a 10-point grading scale. An average mark for the preparation of the methodological part of the research and a presentation – 20%. An average mark for the participation in seminars, quality of the research project – 30%. An examination mark – 50%.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:The student will tell about and explain the essential elements of sociology of law; will know the functions, methods and forms. The student will know general views and reflections of sociology of law, and will be able to refer to competent sources. The student will know the place and role of sociology of law among other legal sciences.
Skills:As a result of successful completion of the study course, the student will be able to manage and engage in social dialogue, apply and use the acquired knowledge professionally. Will be able to identify the main types of interaction between the individual and the society, describe their rationality and peculiarities of conditionality. Will be able to apply the conclusions used in the study course to the practical work of a lawyer, based on the teaching of sociology of law. Will be able to deal with legal issues independently, using of sources of sociology of law and knowledge of their application. Will prepare and express the necessary application of sociology of law in professional work.
Competencies:The student will be able to carry out independent research, correctly describing it on the basis of the acquired knowledge. Will define the areas of law, in which sociology of law is to be applied. Will clarify situations in a professional way and create elements of solution in integration of the society. Will be able to formulate social institutes, to separate them from philosophy and mass culture. Together with the relevant knowledge professionals, will develop the traditions of law and their practical application in a single perspective of sociology of law.
